Ascent Carrauntoohil with a mountain hiking guide based in Killarney
As an experienced professional, Cesar will manage the itineraries and spectacular mountain routes of your walk very carefully.
He's fully insured (Public Liability Insurance) and able to navigate on the mountains safely under any weather conditions. César observes, approaches and explores the mountains from every angle, and will advise about the most suitable route.
Many years ago, he was touched by the beauty of Ireland, especially the South West. During the last 9 years, Cesar has extensively explored Killarney National Park, Mangerton, Purple Mountain, the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, Iveragh, Dingle and Beara peninsulas, and walked most of the mountains ranges of Ireland.
Cesar regularly leads walks in a voluntary capacity for a Hillwalking Club, and has organised and coordinated walking holidays in his homeland - the mountains of Alicante, Sierra Nevada & Nerja in Spain.
Water running from streams, rivers, waterfalls and lakes along to The Wild Atlantic Ocean; woodlands with native and ancient trees covered in moss; wild flowers, ferns, heather and gorse; red deer, wild goats, white-tailed eagles, foxes; remains of dwellings built by earlier inhabitants thousands of years ago will cause you to pause.
Walking in this scenery will enhance the positive side of your personality and you will be filled with a sense of well-being.
Spectacular Scenery
The journey through The Gap of Dunloe showcases the grey and purple majesty of Purple Mountain and the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, which contrasts with Mangerton Plateau and the dramatic mountain passes around Horses Glen.
There is the vibrant magic and prevalent green of summer in the valleys and woodlands of Killarney National Park, which transforms into a rich tapestry of differing shades of golden browns as summer turns to autumn over the mountains of County Kerry.
Walk could be adapted to changing conditions.
Weather, time of the year, ground conditions, terrain, distance, ascent, time, pace, quality of hiking gear, your fitness level, how you feel (energy level), hillwalking experience, and the group’s ability, are factors that will determine the real grade of difficulty of a walk. For instance, wet ground (rocks, grass) makes difficult to keep the balance and increases the risk of a slip.
The walks take place on varied terrain at different paces. Some sections of the routes will be through tough wet boggy moorland, uneven broken ground, areas with overgrown heather, grass or bracken, and ascending hills and mountains over steep ground.
Often we do short stops to catch our breath; to admire the mountains, flora and wildlife; to take pictures; to have lunch break, etc. After a walk, you might feel a little bit tired, but have the impression that time passed quickly and have a feeling of happiness & well-being. Those are the signs that you enjoyed thoroughly the walk.
No matter the season, or how many times you have visited, each time will fill you with joy.
Flexible choosing paths matching our abilities.
Dynamic creating a very supportive and trusting ambience.

The Mindful Hiking concept which has evolved from Cesar’s experience when walking in this spectacular landscape, encourages his fellow walkers to enjoy, love and respect the natural environment and leave no trace, save for their happy memories.
For safety, comfort, and to cope with the weather in Ireland. It will help to keep you dry, an important factor to enjoy a walk when is raining. Please, bear in mind that in summer with bad weather on the mountains some days are like in winter.

I must warn that this is not an easy hike AT ALL. If you are looking for a nice beautiful challenge, then this is for you!! However, I like torturing myself and going on hard yet beautiful hikes. Regardless, the hike was worth it and the GORGEOUS sites are something a camera could never truly capture. This is was an amazing and unforgettable experience and I am sooooo happy I did it! Plus, I was only sore for one day ;)
David – UK – 2023 🌟 5
The Carrauntoohil walk with Cesar was the highlight of our recent trip to Ireland. Cesar did a great job of tailoring the ascent/descent to the abilities of individual members of the group. Participants should be aware that this is quite a strenuous hike.

Cesar made sure you were safe and paid great attention to you. He explained the walk up the mountain and what to expect and how to be safe. He was a fun guy who made the hike very enjoyable. I’d definitely have him be my guide again.
Daniel – Ireland – 2022
Cesar made the trip as pleasurable and comfortable as possible. He allows you to go at your own pace and provides vital guidance as you journey up the mountain. He is also very friendly, easy going and will take lots of pictures for you! Would highly recommend this experience. 5 🌟

INCREDIBLE!!! I couldn’t have done it without Cesar’s patient guidance and excellent company. It’s a tricky hike up and down the mountain but with many surprises from animals and views along the way. Cesar is great company and takes excellent photos. Time flew by!! 5 🌟

This experience was well worth it - Cesar is a natural navigator and wonderful guide. He knew the mountain like the back of his hand and I felt comfortable following his lead - I was a solo traveller and was nervous about being able to safely find my way up the mountain, I genuinely don’t think I could have done the hike without his skills. He also took me to all the best viewpoints! Incredible hike. 5 🌟
Katie – US – 2022
First off, I definitely wasn't in good enough shape to do this experience, so just a bit of warning to those who take the "good fitness level" requirement loosely! But, having said that, Cesar was absolutely incredible about being patient and supportive through the entire experience. I honestly didn't think I could make it to the top of Carrauntoohil mountain, but he encouraged me and took many breaks with us. He was extremely knowledgeable and confident, which made us feel at ease. We'd absolutely recommend him!! 5 🌟
Chiara – UK – 2022

He was considerate in always checking how we were feeling and assessing the situation to adapt the walk to our abilities and the ever changing weather! He even created a really beautiful video for us of the day, which we really appreciated. Highly recommend! 5 🌟

Walking with Cesar and his friend John was amazing. The views were epic and I got an amazing workout in the process. If you want to get to the summit and gain a much better experience than the more tourist-friendly trail, booking with Cesar is a must! 5 🌟

“Cesar was a fantastic guide and even though it was overcast the hike is very worth it! We made it all the way to the summit of Carrauntoohil and he took some nice photos for me too. The hike is definitely intense though, you should be in shape and prepared for climbing not just hiking.” 5 🌟
Catherine – US – 2022
“Cesar is an amazing very educated guide. We had a hike planned that we had to reschedule and he was very accommodating and recommended another hike the next day. We couldn’t ask for a better guide! We will be doing future hikes with Cesar!” 5 🌟
Laura – Ireland – 2021
After reading the previous reviews I decided Cesar was the person I wanted to be our guide. While we have a good level of fitness it was the route that scared me to try on our own. Cesar delivered exactly what the other reviewers said. He has a calm presence and manages to inspire your confidence. He explained how to use your feet, how to walk on the rocks and got me to practice switching pole from hand to hand while using the other for scrambling. There were 2 of us and after chatting and getting a sense of our goals and capabilities he challenged us to go at a much faster pace than I would if we were on our own. I would therefore recommend that you contact for a private or small group Cesar if you would like to also challenge yourself under his safe and careful guidance. I for one have already planned a longer trip in the future to try the horseshoe! If you book Cesar you will not be disappointed. 5 🌟
Dave – Ireland – 2021
Everybody talks about the Devils Ladder at Carrauntoohil, Cesar brought me up O'Shea’s Gully (where I swam in Ireland's highest lake) to the summit (where the view was spectacular and down the heavenly gate and the views and route was fantastic. I would not have know about this route at all, only for Cesar guiding the way, and the journey felt like being in a Lord of the Rings movie and I was on an epic quest! I would highly recommend the experience. 5 🌟
David – Singapore – 2021 5 🌟
What a wonderful day! Cesar took me on a route that I never would have found. First hour was a steep climb, over heather and grass, soft underfoot. We got up to the point that the scramble over rocks begins. Not as difficult as I thought it would be, Cesar’s calmness kept me feeling safe and confident. Then before you know it, we were on the top of Beenkeragh, stunning views across to the ridge to Carrauntoohil, you could almost touch the cross, but it was still 60 mins away. We stopped to chat to a lovely crew from Cork, youngest was 69 years young, and she showed her youth as she scrambled and joked. Gave me great encouragement for the future I hope to have. We moved across the ridge, top of Carrauntoohil, then headed towards the ridge leaning right away from the beaten path. We stopped had lunch, then crossed back towards the top of the devil’s ladder, but veered left towards heavenly Gates, then across the Balcony, down to the lakes. Moseyed back on the rocky road to the car park in Lisleibane. Cesar kept us off trodden paths, on nice soft turf, which was easy on the knees, and kept us away from others, which was good. We had nice chat, great day, and I feel that I’ve done a unique route across these hills. I’m from Dublin originally, Cesar is from Spain; I’ve climbed Carrauntoohil 4 times (but never Beenkeragh), this was the most interesting route by far. Great day; thanks Cesar!

It was a great experience. I am a beginner in climbing but Cesar was very kind and encouraging. He adjusted our pace and Carrauntoohil route to make sure we could make it. He has a good balance of both nice talking and giving us space. It was a fantastic experience!
Erin – Ireland – 2021
Cesar was a lovely guide to Carrauntoohil. Very patient and clear about the hike. He brought two adults and a 7 year old. Cesar was chatty and not too chatty! Just the right level of engagement, he allowed for us to enjoy the hike and ask questions. He is clearly knowledgeable in safety and showed us how to check for safe rocks and such like. I would recommend Cesar as a guide. Brilliant experience.
Pat – Ireland – 2021
I questioned whether I needed a guide or not but soo glad I got Cesar. A different route up and down which was magical. Highly recommended, safety, knowledge and the best views and serenity. Thanks Cesar.
Rena – Ireland – 2021
“My climb to the top of Carrauntoohil would not have been possible without the confidence Cesar inspired in me with his sense of being in very capable hands and his many helpful tips along the way in some difficult parts.”
Warren - Ireland - 2021
We had the worst weather yet still an amazing experience. Cesar was excellent as our guide and his experience is the only reason we got to the top of Carrauntoohil. Don't attempt that walk without a guide.
Tee - Ireland - 2021
Cesar brings with him his experience and passion for hill walking on this experience. It was a tremendous day and Cesar made the hike safe and pleasant. I would highly recommend this for anyone but particularly anyone with less hill walking experience who is keen to conquer Carrauntoohil. Cesar will ensure the hike remains safe and at a personalised pace.
Claire - Ireland - 2020

Killarney Mindful Hiking was an excellent experience as a family! Cesar was a great encouraging force and his unique guidance inspired us to really treasure the mountain in very subtle and powerful ways. I've really fell comfortable and in safety during all the walk, he takes times to explain us the area and we have enough moments to take some rest. He is really passionate about hiking and Ireland generally, I appreciate his curiosity.

I had a wonderful time to hike until the top of Carrauntoohil with the guide Cesar (15th of November, with snow)! I am delighted to have chosen to contact him, I never could have done this walking alone. Cesar has adjusted the course with my physical condition and my equipment; I trusted him and we took a passage that I did not think I could cross! A real adventure! Thank you very much Cesar!

Cesar was so kind and thoughtful during the experience to Mount Brandon. My friend was unable to do the hike because of health concerns and the weather was not the most favourable so Cesar was able to help guide us around other parts of the Dingle peninsula and offered to show us around by car so that my friend could enjoy her time as well. Lovely time spent with Cesar!

Lovely experience to hike along some of the hills and mountains that wind alongside the Wild Atlantic Way. The views are beyond what the imagination can conceive. Cesar truly loves & is connected to the land & his enthusiasm for it shows. If you go on a hike with him you, too, may also fall in love with the wonderful & enchanting mountains of Killarney. If you book this hike you won’t be disappointed.
Ronald - UK - 2019
Another fantastic day with Cesar Lopez and Killarney Mindful Hiking. This was my first time walking on the Beara Peninsula and the weather could not have been better. There were some tricky sections to be negotiated during our ascent but Cesar guided me through those before we enjoyed epic views across to the Iveragh Peninsula and the MacGillycuddy's Reeks along our entire ridge walk. The descent was a little boggy but the flowering gorse bushes made up for this and we were soon back onto the fields and lanes back towards our starting point.
Brendan - US - 2019
My son and I spent New Year's Eve day with Cesar on a hike of the Wild Atlantic Way. What a magical experience! Cesar demonstrated a superb command of the guiding profession, helping two clients with different skill and fitness levels enjoy themselves throughout the (literal & figurative) ups and downs of an Irish December day. He had a careful and caring attitude from the very start, when he sized us up and checked our equipment, all the way through. He even shared snacks!! I couldn't recommend him any more highly!
Tanja - The Netherlands - 2021
We had a lovely hike with Cesar. He accommodated the hike to our wishes and fitness and took care of our safety, since Purple Mountain does not have any official paths. We especially appreciated the walking sticks he provided.
Ann Marie - Ireland - 2020
My friend and I were very impressed with Cesar's Purple Mountain guided hike. He took us up a lesser known route which gave us spectacular views of the Gap of Dunloe. He is very knowledgeable of the mountains in the area and we will be asking Cesar to take us up more mountains. Great value for money as well as we found that other guides were charging more for similar routes in the area. Cesar is very friendly and professional.”
Steve - UK - 2019
“If I am thinking of some proper epic walking in the nearby Cork and Kerry Mountains, there is only one mountain guide. Cesar Lopez from Killarney Mindful Hiking. Take a bow, son. YNWA”
Dan - Ireland - 2019
Cesar Lopez of Killarney Mindful Hiking is an outstanding Hill Walking Guide with a great knowledge of the hills in Kerry and West Cork. His walks are always scenic, interesting and most enjoyable.
Bridie - Ireland - 2019 - Hike to Shehy & Purple mountains
I had a beautiful hike today on the mountains of Kerry. Our guide/leader was Cesar, who guided a group of 19 up a part of the mountain that is seldom trod. We set of from the Gap of Dunloe and traversed east. We ascended Shehy from the south and had lunch on the "rocks" there. Then onto Purple Mountain and descended back down to the Gap by the little lake of Glas Lough. There were fantastic views, great comradery and a feel good factor among the group, that was safely lead by Cesar. Thank you.
Suzanne - Netherlands - 2021 - Strickeen - The Gap of Dunloe
We had a great day! Cesar takes care of the right pace, knows interesting facts about the route and takes you off the regular tracks.

The hiking tour to the Mangerton mountain with Cesar was great.. I felt really safe during the walk.. The weather was not good, nevertheless we could reach the top.. It was an unforgettable experience. I definitely recommend Cesar.
Jessica - Ireland - 2019
Cesar from Killarney Mindful Hiking was an amazing guide for varying fitness levels up Mangerton. He adjusted the trail we took based on weather, ability, and what he thought we might like. At one point I managed to get separated from the group. Cesar spotted me, assessed the situation, and calmly guided me back to the group. He provided a stellar experience that was challenging yet manageable.
Yvonne - Ireland - 2019
I took part in a group hike up Mangerton mountain on 14th September 2019 with a group from the gym I attend. Cesar was absolutely fantastic. He lead us up with ease taking everyone's fitness levels into account and made sure we got the most spectacular views. I can't recommend Cesar enough.
Emer - Ireland - 2019
Cesar is an excellent guide. I attended a group hike and he really took the time to ensure everyone was comfortable with the pace at all times. His knowledge of the area is very thorough and we had such an interesting and enjoyable day!
Niamh - Ireland - 2019
Cesar was an outstanding guide and took everyone's fitness levels into consideration. Couldn’t have asked for a better guide to help us up to the top of Mangerton. Highly recommend Cesar and Killarney Mindful Hiking.
Sharon - Ireland - 2019
Most recently walked Bennaunmore (Co Kerry), guided by Cesar on 7th March 2019. Cesar is an excellent guide having an in depth knowledge of the area. I would recommend KMhiking for both individual and group outings at any level. Cesar is very good at tailor making walks to fit all ability levels. I have also been on 3 trips organised by Cesar to Alicante in Spain, where again the walking and guiding have been of the highest standard. Additionally I was very impressed by the logistical organisation, airport transfers, hotels etc on my Spanish trips.
Margaret - Ireland - 2019 Navigation Training.
Hi, my name is Margaret and I’m both a regular walker on many of Cesar’s walks and I’m also a pupil. Cesar is a brilliant teacher, his teaching is done on the mountains, his navigation lessons are well thought out and well taught. I’m confident that after a lesson or exercise he’s taught, I’ve actually picked it up. As a walk leader I’ve the upmost confidence in his skills to lead any type of walk safely in any type of terrain and in any of our very diverse weather conditions, all of which can occur on any day on our Irish mountains. Walking with Cesar has led me to new truly beautiful places because as a Hill walker for years I thought I’d seen it all. I hope to enjoy many more years of walking and discovering new areas to explore. Thanks Cesar for helping me explore different parts of my beautiful country.
Ann - Ireland - 2018
I wish to thank you again for the wonderful trip that we all enjoyed so much. You put in a huge amount of time and effort in to organising everything and I can't thank you enough for that. Walks were great, El Campello was lovely and the two meals we had together were superb. There was a great spirit of friendship in the group, even though we were only meeting some for the first time. I enjoyed every minute of it. Again many thanks for a truly amazing walking holiday.
